Itâs a quote by Vincent van Gogh, who once saidâŚ
âIf you hear a voice within you say âyou cannot paint,â
then by all means paintâŚ
and that voice will be silenced.â
Thatâs it…
If you think you canât paint⌠paint.
Not perfectly.
Not beautifully.
Not professionally.
Just⌠paint.
What I also love about this quote is that he doesnât say anything about what to paint.
Or how much.
Or how good it has to be.
I always imagine him meaning something incredibly simpleâŚ
Grab a paintbrush.
Any paintbrush.
Dip it in paint.
Any paint.
And slap one stroke of paint on the wall or onto a piece of paper.
Thatâs it.
In THAT moment, your thought that âI cannot paintâ is no longer trueâŚ
Because you just painted.
Perhaps imperfectly…
Even awkwardly…
Perhaps only for two seconds…
But you painted.
And, with that, something else happens.
Youâre now in motion.
That first tiny movement often supports us to take another step⌠and then another.
To paint another stroke⌠and then another.
Van Goghâs quote speaks directly to one of the most painful and debilitating patterns that can keep you (and me) stuck in The Abundance Trapâ˘âŚ
Itâs the all-or-nothing pattern.
Any chance youâre familiar with it, my friend?
If you canât do something BIGâŚ
or FASTâŚ
or BEAUTIFULLYâŚ
or PERFECTLYâŚ
You think itâs not enough.
So you do⌠nothing.
You might even start believing things like:
âI canât do it.â
âIâm not capable.â
âIâll never follow through.â
âIt will never work.â
I know thatâs what Iâve done throughout my life. Â What about you?
Yet Van Goghâs quote shatters that whole pattern.
Heâs basically saying:
Do something.
Do it imperfectly.
Just begin.
And the moment you do, you experience yourself differently.
You SEE yourself differently.
So Iâm curious…
- Is there a place or situation â or even a project â thatâs having you think âyou cannot paintâ?
- Where you might be stuck on the âdoing nothingâ side of the all-or-nothing pattern?
- What have you convinced yourself you canât do because it wonât be perfect, beautiful, massive or fast?
If so, what would it look like for you to âgrab a paintbrush and slap some paint on a sheet of paperâ?
One small action.
One tiny beginning.
One imperfect step.
Not to prove your worth.
Not to impress anyone.
But to silence the voice in you that thinks you canât.
That thinks youâre not enough.
To discover your belief might not be true.
Now⌠one important thing.
If this quote is really resonating with you, please donât swing from doing nothing⌠to suddenly trying to do EVERYTHING.
Thatâs another version of the same pattern.
Donât go from:
âIâll put one stroke of paint on the wallâŚâ
to:
âI MUST PAINT THE ENTIRE HOUSE BY TOMORROW!â
InsteadâŚ
what if you simply practiced staying in motion?
Sustainably.
Gently.
Creatively.
Last year I created four short videos about three important âmusclesâ that support you to free yourself from the all-or-nothing pattern in an empowering way.
These âthree musclesâ pair beautifully with the wisdom of Van Goghâs quote.
That’s why I want to gift them to you today. đ
Access the videos here>>>
I DO hope youâll watch them, my friend!
And Iâd love to hear how you responded to Van Goghâs quote.
Will you grab a brush and paint one stroke today?
Because what you just might discover is that one stroke can have a bigger impact than you might expect.
Not only in your life â but in how you see, think and feel about yourself.
