What If You’re Not Supposed to Throw Away Your Limiting Beliefs

I recently participated in a class about clearing money blocks and creating an empowering money mindset.

It was facilitated by someone I deeply respect. So I thought it would be a great way to support her and keep learning and growing myself.

It was a great class.
Much of what she shared I agreed with 100%.
She covered material I’ve taught for years — and still do.

More importantly, like me, she wants her clients — and all people — to know themselves as worthy.

As deserving of good things… including having the money they need to prosper and thrive.

But then she said something that surprised me – and made my whole body go…

NO…

It was right after she had us identify some of our limiting beliefs — the stories in our minds that hold us back.

Things like:

  • “I can’t make money doing what I love.”
  • “I don’t deserve more.”
  • “It’s not okay for me to have lots of money.”
  • “You have to work hard to make lots of money.”

What she said next is what had me cringe…

“If any of the beliefs you wrote down aren’t true or empowering, you need to throw them in the trash.
Tell them you don’t want them anymore… that you’re done with them.
And then you need to create new beliefs.”

I wanted to scream…

NO!

To be fair, she was describing the same approach I used to teach.
It’s a common approach – this idea of creating new beliefs and working on your mindset.

It was the approach I tried in my own life for years.
But it never really worked.

Why?

Because we’re using the same mind that created the original belief to create the new one.

More important than that – and why I had such a visceral response to “throwing them in the trash” – is this…

Those beliefs — those “stories” you might think you need to get rid of?

You have them for a reason.

They were formed in response to real experiences you’ve had.
They’re connected to parts of your psyche that were trying to make sense of something…
or protect you…
or help you get a need met the best way they knew how.

Those beliefs aren’t trash.

  • They are the voices of parts of you that need to be heard.
  • That need to be understood.
  • That need to be loved.
  • That need to grow and heal.

And if you judge them as wrong…
or try to reject, discard or ignore them…
You are, at least subconsciously, rejecting yourself.

And you cannot throw away, reject or ignore parts of yourself and experience wholeness and well-being. That process will never give you a felt sense of abundance — in yourself or in your bank account.

This is why mindset work, by itself, can only take you so far.

You can try to replace one thought with another…
but if the part of you holding that old belief is still there — still hurting, still trying to protect you — it will not go away because you told it to.

Real change doesn’t happen by overriding yourself.

It happens when you stop fighting yourself.

When you begin to come home to all of who you are…

When you accept and embrace all parts of yourself — limiting beliefs and all.

They have something to teach you…
And they need something from you.

  • Love.
  • Compassion.
  • Understanding.
  • Acceptance.
  • Wisdom.

So, my friend, if you’ve been trying to change your mindset…
If you’ve tried to get rid of limiting beliefs…

But it hasn’t produced the results – or the experience – you long for.
I get it.

Maybe the problem isn’t the beliefs and stories you’ve been telling yourself…

Maybe it’s what you’ve been taught to do with them.

It’s not about throwing them away, my friend.
It’s about embracing them… welcoming them.
And, like compost, using them to support growth and new life…

They are part of who you are… and a necessary part of who you will become…

At the deepest level, my friend, THIS is what frees you from The Abundance Trap™.
It’s what opens you to a new experience of yourself – and of money.

I’d love to hear from you, Teresa…
What has this brought up for you?

Any chance you’ve been trying to get rid of your limiting beliefs…
And inadvertently rejecting parts of yourself in the process?
